Biography of Jerry Goldsmith by Jason Ankeny For over four decades, Jerry Goldsmith ranked among the film and television industry's most highly-regarded and prolific composers; at the peak of his activity during the 1960s, he was estimated to have scored an average of about six films annually. Born in Los Angeles on February 10, 1929, Goldsmith studied music at the University of South Carolina, and after accepting a job as an office clerk at CBS television later graduated to the network's music department in 1950. There he composed themes for series including Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, Have Gun Will Travel, The Twilight Zone and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. before turning to film in 1957, debuting with the score to Black Patch. Under the tutelage of the great Alfred Newman, Goldsmith rose to prominence with 1962's Lonely Are the Brave, and subsequently emerged as one of Hollywood's most prolific composers. Among his credits were such diverse offerings as Patton, Planet of the Apes, Seconds, Chinatown, Poltergeist and Rambo: First Blood Part II; while nominated for over a dozen Academy Awards, Goldsmith won only one, for 1976's The Omen. Additionally, he regularly toured concert halls, performing his music and conducting the likes of the San Diego Symphony and Britain's Royal Philharmonic. Biography of James Horner by Jason Ankeny Famed for his lush, sweeping scores for films including Braveheart, Apollo 13, and Titanic, the prolific composer James Horner was born in Los Angeles on August 14, 1953. Educated at London's Royal College of Music as well as local universities USC and UCLA, he landed his first motion picture assignments during the 1970s, scoring B-movies like The Lady in Red, Humanoids of the Deep, and Battle Beyond the Stars for producer Roger Corman's New World organization. By 1982, Horner had moved on to major studio fare including 48 Hrs. and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and four years later he notched his first Academy Award nominations for his score to the science fiction classic Aliens as well as for the song "Somewhere Out There," from the animated picture An American Tail. In 1989, Horner earned a second Oscar nomination for his score to Field of Dreams, that same year winning a Grammy for his work on the Civil War drama Glory; in 1995 he was honored with two more Academy Award noms, for Braveheart and Apollo 13. Horner finally struck Oscar gold in 1997, taking home statuettes for his score to the blockbuster Titanic as well as the film's original song "My Heart Will Go On," a hit for Celine Dion. After writing scores for movies like Commando and New World, Film Music Masterworks: Original Soundtracks, which contained pieces from some of Horner's best-known work (Apollo 13, Braveheart, Willow, and of course, Titanic, among others), was issued in 2006. Biography of Elliot Goldenthal by Jason Ankeny Composer Elliot Goldenthal was born May 2, 1954, in New York City, going on to study at the Manhattan School of Music under John Corigliano and Aaron Copland. He first rose to prominence in 1988 for his Obie Award-winning work on Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass, a collaboration with his wife, director Julie Taymor. The following year, Goldenthal also scored his first feature film, Gus Van Sant's superb Drugstore Cowboy, continuing to alternate between stage and screen throughout his career. In 1990, he composed "Shadow Play Scherzo," commissioned by ASCAP in honor of Leonard Bernstein's 70th birthday. "Pastime Variations," commissioned by the Haydn-Mozart Chamber Orchestra in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Ebbets Field, premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that same year. Goldenthal returned to film in 1992 with his score to David Fincher's Alien 3, earning his first Academy Award nomination for his work on Neil Jordan's 1994 effort Interview with the Vampire. He and Jordan remained regular collaborators in the years to follow, teaming on pictures including Michael Collins, The Butcher Boy, and In Dreams. Arguably Goldenthal's most acclaimed project is 1996's "Fire Paper Water," an oratorio commissioned by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Vietnam War; the Sony Classical recording of the piece featured soloist Yo-Yo Ma. After reuniting with Taymor on a stage adaptation of the Carlo Gozzi fable The Green Bird, in 1997 Goldenthal was commissioned by the American Ballet Theatre to compose a ballet inspired by Shakespeare's Othello; in 1999, he also scored Taymor's first feature film, Titus.
