The Little Boy Blues were a Chicago based garage-punk outfit that began as a blues band. Between 1965 and 1967 they issued several local 45s, some of which are considered better than the subsequent 1968 album In The Woodland Of Weir. The 1967 Ronko 45, Great Train Robbery/Season Of The Witch, was picked up by WCFL radio and became regionally very popular enabling them to pick up a few prestigious gigs including two with the Animals at the Chicago Auditorium and Aerie Crown Theatre. They recorded a superb fuzz-laden rendition of Van Morrison''s I Can Only Give You Everything (a song covered by many bands of the era including the Iguanas and MC5), Willie Dixon''s I''m Ready (some heavy R&B harmonica) and You Don''t Love Me (which kicks off with a vocal commotion). The original members were: Mark Coplon, vocals, Bill Mooney, drums, Peter Pollack, guitar and chief songwriter Ray Levin, piano, organ bass and flute. All words and music for their 1968 full length album In The Woodland Of Weir were written by Ray Levin. It was produced by Dan Schneider. The engineers were Jerry DeClerq and Ron Pickup and it was recorded at Universal and Sound Studios in Chicago. The contra-bass clarinet was courtesy of Basil Accolade. A second line-up was put together briefly for a recording of the rock and soul number Ain''t Too Proud To Beg which was included on the Happy Tiger compilation Early Chicago in 1971. With Ray Levin are Paul Ostroff, guitar; James Boyce, drums; Frank Biner, guitar and vocals; Paul Serrano, George Bean and Joe Burnett, trumpets; Cy Touf, bass trumpet; and Len Druss, baritone sax.
