A New York City-based band formed in late 1979, by Michael Gira, brothers Dan and Josh Braun, and Rick Oller and drummer Angelo Pudignano. Future Swan Jonathan Kane was the third drummer. When the band broke up in 1981, Gira formed the Swans, later joined by Kane, D. Braun was also a short lived member of the Swans whose only recorded appearance is no the Body to Body, Job to Job CD. The Brauns joined The Del Byzanteens (with future director Jim Jarmusch), then went on to form Deep Six.

On the earliest material, the band started out almost as a straight no wave band, with Don Christensen of the contortions on bass. The band was originally called METAL ENVELOPE before Circus Mort.
When the Brauns met Oller and Gira, they stepped in on bass and keys. The sound was very raw but very intellectual and theatrical with song titles like “updown”, “floor rising”, “excitement”, “this frustration” “require, require” . The sound was a mix of punk and no wave, kind of like Wire.
The bands original sound was quite unusual. At some point a friend of the band’s manager, Susan Martin suggested the band stop playing all in unison on every note and try some syncopation. The suggestion was disasterous: The band responded and quickly turned into a herky jerky talking heads influenced embarassement. The band trudged on till one fine day Mike Pedulla (RIP), the second drummer decided to suddenly quit the band. When Johnathan Kane showed up to audition. It was a revelation. The sound gelled instantly. Kane brought out the ferocious nature of the band that is only eluded to on the only official recording of the band on the CIRCUS MORT EP. During the recording of this EP, all five band members were snorting crystal meth for hours, that’s why the speed is so ridiculous on that record. The producer was too busy eating sprouts and meditating to get a handle on this unwieldy crew. . With the rawest of intentions, the band took off to Boston and played what was to be their last two shows at the Rat. Both sets were recorded and are nothing short of amazing. The EP tracks played live have balls unimagined. The second set, the band was all tripping on very strong LSD. Songs like “Pig”, “Sensitive Skin” and “Ribbons and Bows” were blistering. With material markedly more dance-influenced showing up on the EP, fans knew not what to make from this utterly nasty and powerful live band. Thurson Moore and Kim Gordon were fans and would show up at the bands gigs in NY. The management obviously wanted a hit and hired a hippy producer who tried to neuter the band. Near the end, there was talk of changing the name of the bands to SWANS. The band didn’t care so for a few rehearsals, the band were now dubbed the SWANS. Shortly after, a huge gig was offered to them, opening for Mission of Burma at Club 57, then a tour of the west coast. In spite of those two career changing potential opportunities, it just fell apart. Two out of the four original members, Josh Braun and Rick Oller wanted M. Gira OUT of the band. Dan Braun and John Kane did not. The band broke up and Oller, Kane and the Brauns formed Pumping Jelly which only lasted 3 or 4 months. There were continued discussions about what Swans would be even after the demise of Circus Mort. Mike asked D.Braun to join and record on the first Swans EP which ended up not happening because Gira didn’t want to collaborate. There were philosophical and theoretical discussions about what Swans might be, but Braun and twin brother Josh eventually moved on and went on to the Del Byzanteens, Deep Six, T-Venus, Red Decade, Live Skull, Radio Firefight, etc… D.Braun eventually came back and played with Gira, Sun Hanel, John Kane, Roli Mossimann line up at CBGBs. Lydia Lunch was one of about 9 people in the audience. Those tracks show up on Body to Body, Job to Job. D. Braun ended up playing in Glenn Branca’s Symphony #5. Kane played with Rhys Chatham and La Monte Young. Gira after the Swans formed the Angels of Light and was the founder of Young God Records.

Michael Gira (pronounced jeer-AH) (born 1954) is an American musician, author, and artist. He was the main force behind the now dissolved New York City musical group Swans (1982-1997) and currently fronts The Angels of Light. He is also the founder of Young God Records (YGR website).

Gira lived with his parents in a relatively affluent suburb of Los Angeles, California though they divorced when he was a young teenager. After staying with his alcoholic mother for much of his youth, he was sent to live with his father in Indiana and then Paris. He ran away from home and hitch-hiked across Europe, and was finally arrested for selling drugs in Israel. Although he was only a teenager at the time, he was placed in an adult prison. His father found Gira with the aid of Interpol and sent him back to the United States. Back in Los Angeles, he played in a band called Little Cripples and enrolled in art school and imagined that he would someday be a visual artist (Gira sketched obsessively); however, he soon became disillusioned with the elitism and academia surrounding the art world and dropped out. However, Gira’s interest in art is known to have affected his music; PlayInner Female is a study of Francis Bacon. It could also be said that Gira’s visceral, surreal writing style is comparative to Bacon’s paintings.

In 1979 Gira moved to New York City in order to start a band; he was influenced by no wave and noise artists like Suicide and Glenn Branca. He played with the band Circus Mort before forming Swans. Before achieving success with his music, Gira was forced to work many tedious, backbreaking jobs in construction and demolition. He also began a short-lived art magazine, No.

Initially, Swans’ focus was raw rhythm and abrasive textures, usually eschewing melody for visceral power. They became known for their abrasive experimental and post-industrial sound. The band’s lineup and sound evolved over time, most markedly with the inclusion of Gira’s eventual girlfriend, Jarboe, who added her ethereal voice and synthesizers to the group in 1985. Gira and Swans spent the next twelve years releasing studio, live, and side-project albums. Gira’s frustration with the various record labels they recorded for grew over time.

After dissolving Swans in 1997 Gira released a solo album under his own name and began a new musical direction with The Angels of Light, which are a quieter, more acoustic-based group than Swans. Nonetheless, The Angels of Light retain much of the intensity of Gira’s former project. While The Angels of Light are a rather traditional “song-based” group, Gira also spent time experimenting with soundscapes, found sound, and loops with the The Body Lovers project. He has also released several albums under his own name including Drainland (1995), The Somniloquist (2000, a spoken word album), and What We Did (2001), a collaboration with Windsor for the Derby’s frontman Dan Matz.

Gira founded his own record label, Young God Records, which has released albums from such artists as Devendra Banhart, Mi and L’au, and Akron/Family as well as the Swans, The Angels of Light and The Body Lovers back catalogues.

Akron/Family served as Gira’s backing band during the recording of and touring for The Angels of Light’s 2005 album, The Angels of Light Sing ‘Other People’.

Skin is the name of one of Michael Gira’s and Jarboe’s projects aside of better known Swans. There was an emotionally charged LP called Blood, Women, Roses made under this name released in 1987 with cover versions of songs such as Cry Me a River and The Man I Love along with original material from the artists themselves. There were some 12” releases stemming from this LP. 1988 saw the release of the 2nd Skin LP, on which Gira provided lead vocals, with Jarboe doing backing vocals on several tracks. In 1990 the name changed to ‘The World of Skin’, and along with the name change came the release of ‘10 Songs for Another world’ LP, in which both Gira and Jarboe provided lead vocals. There’s no significant difference between Skin and Swans, the music is the same in many senses. It could be said that the change to Skin marked a slight change in style of the music in that it became slightly slower and more emotional.

Swans is an influential band from New York City, New York, United States, active from 1982 to 1997, reformed in 2010, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira.

Marginally associated with the no wave scene at first, their original sound was slow and heavy, with live performances that were often so brutal and physical that in a number of instances certain audience members were made ill, police were called and venues were shut down. This early physical sound is possibly best heard on the live album Public Castration Is a Good Idea.

Their initial style shifted a little by the time Swans released seminal twin albums Greed and Holy Money. The music had sped up, at times being even more punishing than their earlier output. Drum machines and samples were slightly more prominent. Michael Gira was joined vocally by Jarboe which gave the band a broader sonic range. Tracks featuring Jarboe were often quieter, even pretty, acting as counterpoint to the more harrowing themes on the albums. Over time, this style would come to dominate the Swans’ output, although they somehow seem to have been able to make a strummed acoustic guitar seem as brutal as their earlier amped-up assaults. The lush instrumentation of their albums from the late 1980s and the 1990’s anticipated the birth of post-rock.

Swans eventually broke up in 1997; Gira went on to release some solo work, later forming the band The Angels of Light, who continue many of the themes and styles found in (later) Swans. Jarboe releases solo work and frequently works with other bands and artists; recently she released an album with Neurosis, a group clearly heavily influenced by Swans.

The influence of Swans upon the music world is profound. Across their 15 years of existence, the various styles they explored gave birth to grindcore (Napalm Death, Nasum) modern “cinematic” post-rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono), and atmospheric sludge metal (Isis, Neurosis).

On January 2010 announced Swans reunion and working on new recordings. The song Jim recently added to the playlist at MySpace is an acoustic demo (solo at home) recording by Michael Gira. This, and many other new songs recorded in the same way comprise many of the new (rough versions) of songs under consideration, to be fleshed out on the coming new Swans album. A CD of these acoustic versions, as well as a live (2 shows) DVD of Michael Gira will be for sale very soon as a hand made (by gira) package called I Am Not Insane (CD/DVD). this package - in a limited edition of 1000 - will be sold in order to raise money for the Swans recordings.

The Angels of Light is a musical entity formed in 1997 by singer Michael Gira after he disbanded Swans, the group he’d founded in 1982. The band has marked a distinctly different style for Gira since he left Swans, most noticeably being musically more melodic and less brutal than his previous efforts, though no less emotionally draining.

The Angels of Light include many New York City collaborators, including Dana Schechter of Bee and Flower, Kid Congo Powers of The Cramps, Larry Mullins aka Toby Dammit, Bliss Blood of The Moonlighters and Pain Teens, Thor Harris of Shearwater, and most recently the Brooklyn band Akron/Family.

Gira talks about the Angels project :

[i]I write the songs on acoustic guitar, then gather musicians and friends, and build up the orchestrations with them in the studio and in live performances. I guide the process, but solicit their creative contributions actively. Each recording contains the contributions of an ever-changing plethora of amazing musicians, whom I thank here heartily!

My goal is to achieve the same sense of magic I experienced as a child listening to Burle Ives recordings of Brer Rabbit and other such marvels, including the early Disney children’s records I listened to long ago.

I view the arrangements as little films created to make a context for the words and voice, so that one can drift off into the world the music creates. I produce the Angels recordings, and the production of the recordings is as important to me as the songs themselves.

Most of the instruments used in the recordings are acoustic, but not all. Electric guitars, bass and drums etc., are sometimes used (as well as an occasional electronic sound, or loop), but I intentionally steer clear of a “Rock” sound. It doesn’t interest me at all any more.

However, I have no particular fealty to “The Song” as if it were some sacred codex. On the other hand, just sitting around my house, writing these things, and finally coming up with a statement that I think makes sense, I want to bring them to life as much as possible, in new and challenging ways for both myself and you, so I always strive to present them in a fresh and interesting context.

For this reason, I’m always changing the sonic approach from record to record.

The long awaited re release of Michael Gira’s (Angels of Light / Swans and Young God Records head) soundtrack without a film “psycho-ambient” instrumental opus of sonic chaos and wordless lullabies. Compiled, edited, mangled, fed back, mutated and morphed from high quality recordings of a dizzying array of musicians using acoustic and electric instruments -performed in the studio - as well as loops and fragments generated from these sessions, found cassette recordings, sine waves and drones, live Swans recordings, electronic noise and the occasional insect, weeping woman, or a touching recording of a baby in the process of being circumcised. Gira’s archive of early (from as far back as 1982) analog synth, tape loop experiments and “slabs of sound” mingle and interact here with contemporary studio performances.

Originally composed/recorded in 1998, this prescient collage epic summed up Gira’s 15 year (Swans) obsession with music as raw, mutable sound – alternately dreamy and abrasive, drifting from sweet acoustic melodies to music concrete in one breath. Sound-source contributions from Pan Sonic, Deathprod, Origami Rebulika, Swans and many more. The Body Haters disc contains a new track recorded specifically for this re release. The Body Lovers is a side-project of former Swans leader Michael Gira. He has used sounds from various sources on his only album, Number One Of Three, under this moniker. The sources include old Swans sound samples, aswell as bits and pieces collected from friends and former collaborators.
The Body Lovers is released on Gira’s own label, Young God Records ( http://www.younggodrecords.com ).

As far as new albums go, Gira has not decided yet to make any more. Mostly because of financial concerns.

The World of Skin (previously known just as Skin) was a side project of Michael Gira and Jarboe. This project portrayed a more acoustic folk-based dimension of their work, similar to the Swans’ The Burning World.

They released two albums under the Skin moniker before changing to The World of Skin (Blood, Women, Roses and Shame, Humility, Revenge), and later released an album entitled Ten Songs For Another World. Currently, most of the songs from the first two albums have been repackaged as a “best of” album with the remastered version of Swans’ Children of God.
