The fourth edition of the biggest and best freestyle soccer tournament came to Japan for the global finals 2013. The most talented freestyle footballers from around the world were looking to emulate Kotaro Tokuda, who came away with the title in 2012 in Leece, Italy. 50 Ballers from up to 40 countries will face off over two days in September for the world’s most prestigious freestyle football championship held this year in the Japan in front of the Zojoji Temple and the famous Tokyo Tower. It is the first time an Asian city has hosted the event with previous world championships in Sao Paolo, Brazil (2008), South Africa’s Cape Town (2010) and Lecce in Italy last year. Some 50 ballers, winners from dozens of national championships in a sport that combines soccer with rhythm and style will do their best to impress a jury with their eye-catching tricks and moves. The rules of the game are simple: 3 minutes, 2 players, 1 ball. Qualifiers are set for September 18 with the Top 16 men and the Top 8 women fighting for the title on the final day (September 19). The setting for the Red Bull Street Style World Finals could hardly be more impressive with the Zojoji Temple and the city’s other iconic landmark, the Tokyo Tower in the background. Japan is also home to the reigning world champion Tokura, who surprisingly snatched the title in Lecce last year to go into the 2013 event as the defending champion in front of a home crowd. Arnaud "Sean" Garnier of France won the 2008 finals and Norway's Anders "Azun" Solum won the 2010 title. Red Bull Street Style’s popularity has exploded in football bastions around the world. Athletes go head-to-head in a contest of skill, creativity and ball tricks in three-minute matches. The jury judges the athletes on style, technique, and creativity in combination with music. Competitors challenge each other, alternating ball possession every 30 seconds. They take turns executing their most spectacular tricks to the rhythm of music. In previous finals, the jury included international football legends such as Edgar Davids, George Weah, Fabio Cannavaro and Pippo Inzaghi. For the second time in history of the sport there will also be a women’s competition.
